The first question that’s going to pop up in your head is – Why am I telling you how to BLOCK a feature in Facebook when I should be encouraging chatting on Facebook – social networking in general right?
Okay, think about it this way… You’re working for a radio station and you take requests online. But your DJs have been chatting on Facebook to the point that the radio goes off-air (no song playing and you don’t hear anything over the radio) and then you go into the studio to see what’s wrong and notice that the DJ is chatting on Facebook, quite oblivious to the fact that there’s no song playing on radio. Now imagine that this happens for the zillianth time, despite several warnings.
What’s more important here? Allowing social networking for the DJs or make sure your radio runs the way it’s supposed to? I think you would agree that the main purpose of a radio station is to make sure that music is run uninterrupted. Everything else would have to come after that.
Okay so what do you do as the boss?
A. You fire the DJ
B. You block Facebook
C. You block Chatting on Facebook
Don’t you think that option C. is better for everyone concerned? Why leave candy on the table and tell the kids not to eat. Better hide it away huh? lol
Anyways, long story short, here’s what you do:
- First off, you should be on FireFox or Google Chrome browser.
- Next, you should get the Adblock plus add-on (It’s available for both FireFox and Chrome)
- Once Adblock plus is activated, go to “Preferences” and on the window that opens, click on “Add Filter” (it’s at the bottom).
- Type in this script : facebook.com#div(id*=presence)
- Now click on “OK”
Now when you log in to Facebook you will notice that the chat bar is missing.
This way, you can selectively block Facebook chatting, instead of blocking Facebook altogether. This would allow your employees or colleagues to continue working on Page administration, creating events and any other work-related activities on Facebook, sans chatting. So, let me know if this works for you. I’m sure there are other ways of blocking Facebook chat. If you know of any other method of blocking only the chatting ability in Facebook, I’d love you to share it with me.
I would also like to know what you think about blocking Facebook chat or any other chat; or blocking Facebook altogether at the workplace.
I’m quite agree with ur sugession & wanna let u know what I’m doing to avoid loading chat feed.
Normally chat port woks under “http” unencrypted,so if u access it with “https” chat wont work.
ex – https://facebook.com/nipuna.chaminda
or u can use enforce to use https from browser settings for via ur fire wall.
& once u need to chat just toggle ur url into,
http://facebook.com/nipuna.chaminda

Updated, it’s no longer blocking it with the command line, apparently the FB Dev changed a line of code to go around it. Got a new line of code to block this stupid sidebar?
